The season finale of Being Erica aired last night, and while the season was fairly uneven, overall, I think the show did pretty well with Season 2.
The finale went pretty much the way I thought it would: Erica realized that Ethan is too boring for her (OK, that's not exactly why they broke up, but come on: SNORE), and she helped Kai complete his regret. As expected, once he'd finished writing his song and performed it, Kai Of The Future returned to his time, leaving behind the 22-year-old Kai who had no memory of Erica whatsoever. It was a little annoying to see this part handled in just a few seconds - Erica goes to congratulate him, he doesn't remember her, they part ways forever because now he has a record contract and is going to get famous. I wanted to know more about how that would work! Does Kai remember ANYTHING of the last few months? If not, why isn't he freaked out? If he does remember, why doesn't he remember Erica at all? And I realize that Kai was just a temporary character, but it seems like cheating to just have him immediately off the show. I wanted to see how Erica's friend would react to her and Kai going from really good friends to not even talking. And what about Sam? How would she have reacted when the guy she slept with suddenly had no idea who she was?
I realize that that wasn't the point of the story, but the nit-picker in me really, really wanted to see that. Oh, well. Bye, Sebastian Pigott! You were pretty!
However, it was good to see Erica come full circle from the show's beginning. When the show started, she had no job and no boyfriend and she was terrified and lost; as the season ended, she seemed to have everything together. Now, she's back to being jobless and boyfriendless, but she's grown to the point that it no longer scares her and she has the confidence to take risks and try new things.
The main thing that Season 2 taught me is that Being Erica is at its best when it plays around with the time travel aspects of the show. The worst episodes this season were the typical "Erica goes back in time to fix one of her past mistakes, only to realize that there was a different lesson she needed to learn" stories. The best episodes changed tactics - Erica has a do-over day, Erica goes to the future to see Kai, Dr. Tom goes back to his past to see his daughter, etc. I hope they keep that up in Season 3 (if there is a Season 3) - but, having said that, I hope they don't ruin Dr. Tom by having too many episodes centred around him, because I think his sense of mystery is what keeps him interesting.
Oh, and writers, next time Erica gets a boyfriend, please give him a personality that doesn't resemble a block of mouldy cheese. Thanks. (Sorry, Tyron Leitso, you're very pretty, too, but good lord, Ethan bored the crap out of me.)
