More with Torchwood's Eve Myles

I had the pleasure of talking to Torchwood's Eve Myles a while back - my goodness, her Welsh accent is adorable. Even aside from that, she was just a lovely, lovely person to talk to, so while you can read my main interview here, I thought I'd include some other lovely tidbits she offered about next week's Torchwood miniseries, Children of Earth. (I've seen the whole thing, and I am not exaggerating a little bit when I say it is AMAZING. It airs every weeknight next week on Space.)

Filming the new Torchwood series without Naoko Mori or Burn Gorman, whose characters were killed off at the end of last series: "Not only were they legendary characters, they were my best friends. Two really good friends. It’s like going back to school and changing classes and your best buddies have gone into other classes. You’re looking for them and you’re always expecting them to be there, so it was a bit like that. We missed them terribly, but this series is so frantic and so action-packed that it just flew by, really."

How Gwen has changed this time: "I think because of the organization they work in, everything changes, not only on a daily basis but on an hourly basis, things change. It’s life and death every half an hour with Torchwood because there’s something going on all the time. She’s got the weight of the world on her shoulders – she’s always has, she always will, working for Torchwood, but I think she’s much more kick-ass, in a way. She puts herself on the front line much, much more. I think she’s fearless this year. She’s completely fearless."

Gwen's relationship with Rhys: "Oh, just brilliant. He comes more to the forefront this year because he’s really got to help her in this series. There’s a lot at risk – you’ll see what I mean when you watch. Their relationship gets stronger and becomes more professional, in a way. That’s one thing in her life that doesn’t really change, her down-to-earthness with her husband. That’s what keeps her grounded and hooked to reality. It keeps her anchored."

Her favourite Torchwood episode so far: "I kind of enjoyed the episode 'Something Borrowed,' where she finds herself pregnant. It was so ridiculous and so over-the-top. It was so easy to go over-the-top with it and be ridiculous and all that kind of stuff, but we have to play it real because if you play it to be funny, it’s not going to be funny. It would just have been silly. So if you play it for the seriousness of the matter and it’s hilarious. The situation was funny; not the character. Not what we were saying; the situation was very, very funny. I really enjoyed getting to play Gwen in a lighter way, to have the comedy elements to freak out the humans. To see her, a woman in such a high-standing job, freak out so much. That was fun. The most fun episode to film was 'Countrycide' in the first series; it was just brilliant. Rolling around in the mud – awesome."

Working with respected British actor Paul Copley in Children of Earth: "Well, Paul Copley was the actor this year that I was completely excited to work with. When I learned that Paul Copley was going to play Clement MacDonald – I went to see him at the Globe in London in his King Lear, and I just thought he was extraordinary. I saw his stuff on television and he’s just one of Britain’s best. He’s awesome. So I have all the scenes with him and the scenes are very quiet and private – they were very endearing to do. He is such an established, incredible actor, but sometimes the both of us would forget our lines because we were actually listening to each other so much that we’d forget we were in a scene. That’s a good judge – if you’re working in a scene with someone so good that you forget what you’re doing because you’re listening to them. You’re not looking at them and thinking, 'What am I saying next?' You’re really listening to them and you’re responding to them. It was wonderful to work with him; they’re some of my favourite scenes this year. There were a few scenes that were big scenes – one, in particular, I really enjoyed doing with him. It was brilliant to work with him. He’s an absolute loon off set, but that just made me even happier to work with him, because I’m a picnic short of an afternoon as well. We both got on really, really, really well."

Her pregnancy: "I’ve just finished a film that will be out Christmastime. I finished that three weeks ago and this is my first time off in ten years. I’m due in November so, hopefully, if we get another series [of Torchwood], we’ll maybe go back in February. I’ll have to get used to running in heels again and back into Gwen Cooper mode. But until then, I’m really happy to get really fat and put my feet up."

Can you see how I fell even more in love with her?
