  • Friday Casualties: America's Next Top Model, Paris Hilton, Lost and more

Posted Feb 27 2009, 04:35 PM by KATV with no comments

Welcome to Friday! Here's what Dose has been doing this week, TV-wise:

-- I interviewed Paris Hilton about her new show Paris Hilton's British Best Friend. Don't worry, my soul died a little, too.

-- We talked to Baylor Orlando, the latest designer kicked off Project Runway Canada. I cannot believe he was eliminated and Kim stayed. Her dress was hideous and she's just a giant pile of butt, both physically and personality-wise.

-- I also talked to Candace, who was kicked off of Survivor in episode two. She is very, very bitter.

-- Speaking of Survivor, don't forget to check out TV Talk, because Coach's craziness is quotation No. 1. That man is INSANE. Absolutely no self-awareness.... Which is why I want him to stick around for a while.

    And onto the rest!

-- America's Next Top Model isn't premiering until next Wednesday (yay!), but producers are already casting for the next season (sorry, cycle) and they're only looking for girls under 5'7". Oh, yeah, that'll help the show's non-existent credibility as a modeling competition.

-- Did you watch Lost's very, very awesome episode on Wednesday? They brought back WAAAAALT! But only for a few minutes, which is not enough. I miss WAAAAAAALT! Apparently, WAAAAAALT! wants to come back, too.

-- Speaking of Lost, here's a transcript with EPs Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse from way back, talking about how when one of their characters die, they stay dead. Oops, so much for that, huh? Well, maybe they gave that interview on opposite day.

-- The Onion A.V. Club has an interview with Dollhouse's Eliza Dushku, who says the show really gets good around Episode 6. The bad news: tonight is only Episode 3. Yeah, looking at the ratings, good luck making it another three weeks, darling.

-- The CW has dumped 90210's executive producers, bringing in new blood. Hey, when you're absolute shite, you can only get better, right? I guess we'll see.

-- Are Hilarie Burton and THE CHAD leaving One Tree Hill? Oh, no! Whatever will the tens of fans do?

-- No Doubt will reunite for the first time in five years on an episode of Gossip Girl. Oh, no, does that mean Gossip Girl will turn into the Peach Pit After Dark? (Only people born before 1985 will get that joke - and that's pushing it, actually.)

-- Speaking of GG, Brittany Snow has been cast as a young Lily Van Der Woodsen on the new spinoff. I know, I can't believe Prom Night and John Tucker Must Die didn't jump-start her movie career, either.

-- In what seems like an attempt to shut up all the "ABC is anti-gay" talk, Grey's Anatomy has signed Jessica Capshaw to play lesbian pediatrician Arizona Robbins for the rest of the season, with an option to return next fall. Hey, I didn't think they were anti-gay; I thought they were anti-attractive-gay, and this doesn't really change my position.

-- Chris O'Donnell and LL Cool J are joining the new NCIS spinoff. Wow. More than a decade later, the negative effects of Batman and Robin and Deep Blue Sea are still being felt.

-- And, in news that will make Dose.ca's Ben Carrozza very, very happy, Pushing Daisies star Anna Friel is going topless in her latest movie. (Link NSFW)

    Enjoy your weekend!

  • The Biggest Loser: Wait, nobody died, right?

    Posted Feb 25 2009, 04:06 PM by KATV with 1 comment(s)

Last night was easily the most ridiculous and melodramatic episode of The Biggest Loser of all time. And that is saying something.

I've been suspecting since last season that Bob is nearing the end of his rope, and last night really clinched it for me. At the start of the episode (which was only an hour, due to Obama's speech - hour two airs tonight), the teams completed a challenge to determine whethe they would end up on the black team (Jillian's) or the blue team (Bob), with the team coming in last automatically getting split up (or, if there was only one person on that team, automatically switching to the other trainer). Almost everyone got a new trainer, and ohhh, that's when the waterworks began.

And when I say waterworks, I say waterworks. Bob lost his mind. Everyone was crying. He's standing there with his old teammates, just crying and whining about how this is the WORST THING TO EVER HAPPEN EVER and HOW ARE THEY SUPPOSED TO TRAIN NOW?! I am not even a little kidding when I tell you this exchange took place:

Sione: "I'd rather go home than [not train with you]."
Bob: "You can't go home. You gotta work hard, man. You gotta work hard."
    Filipe: [voice breaking] "HOW?!"
Bob: [crying some more] "I don't know."

Really? You don't know? Here's an idea: YOU GO INTO THE GYM AND WORK OUT LIKE YOU ALWAYS DID. Good lord. Nobody died. They're all still going to see each other all the time. And then this was followed by the cheesiest song ever (it wasn't Sarah McLachlan's "I Will Remember You," but it was close) played over a montage of Bob's old team frolicking and laughing together.

    Again: NOBODY DIED.

Even more ridiculous is that on Jillian Michaels' radio show, she explains that one day a week or so, she and Bob will switch which teams they coach. So Bob's old teammates are still going to train with him. So, so ridiculous. At least Jillian had the sense to tell her new team that this was actually a good thing, since they'd now have twice the advice and perspective on their weight loss and health.

And Sione, while training with Jillian, was just like, "When she tells me to do one more set, I just don't care." Oh, then you're going to do really well when you go home and the trainers are no longer around. Way to keep this reality show in perspective and learn the lesson that sometimes life acts like a butt and you have to find a way to make the best of it.

Meanwhile, Bob is actually crying and breaking down to his players while he's training them. Very, very professional, Bobby.

I have never laughed so hard and also been so frustrated at a bunch of TV people in my life. It's just a show! And you're still going to work out and lose weight like you always did!

And wait, have they never even seen this show before? The teams always get switched up.

And that was just the first hour. Part of me is dreading tonight's theatrics, while another part of me can't wait.

  • Monday Casualties: Conan O'Brien, Dollhouse, the Oscars and more

Posted Feb 23 2009, 04:14 PM by KATV with no comments

Sorry for not posting last Friday, but to make it up to you, here are some Monday TV links for you guys. Be thankful, you ungrateful b*stards.

-- Did you enjoy the Oscars last night? Mickey Rourke was robbed. ROBBED. Oh, well, at least Sean Penn's speech was good. Take a look at my list of best and worst moments, our gallery of Oscar dresses, pictures from the afterparties, the full list of winners, and all of our other Oscar coverage.

-- Did you watch Conan O'Brien's last Late Night show last Friday? Sweet little Conan actually teared up. Sniffle! I was also glad when he said that, despite all the critics who say he has to grow up when he moves to the Tonight Show, there is no way that is going to happen. Aw yeah.

-- Speaking of Conan, I don't know if any of my fives of readers are old enough to remember this, but Amy Poehler used to show up on Late Night every once in a while playing Andy Richter's younger sister. (Um, and again, if you're too young to remember, Andy Richter used to be Conan's sidekick on Late Night.) And, thanks to the power of YouTube, you can watch Amy's segments here! Yay Internet!

-- Unsurprisingly, in its second week, Joss Whedon's Dollhouse went down in the ratings. The second episode was better than the first, but that's kind of like saying Brooke Hogan is a better person than Nick Hogan.

-- Hilarious and awesome: Slade from The Real Housewives of Orange County was arrested.

-- People has photos of Katharine McPhee's upcoming guest appearance on CSI: NY.

-- We knew it wouldn't last long: Rosie O'Donnell has returned to blogging. Sigh.

-- Do you love Eric "McSteamy" Dane? Of course you do. He is a sexy hunk of velvety smooth delight. Well, check out his very, very old guest appearance on Saved By The Bell.

--And, going back to Conan, I just had to post my favourite video from his time as Late Night host, when Norm MacDonald and Courtney Thorne-Smith were the guests, and Norm spent the entire time mocking and disparaging Courtney's career. Glorious.

  • The Biggest Loser: Shut up, Tara

    Posted Feb 18 2009, 02:53 PM by KATV with 14 comment(s)

Wow, if Mandi and Aubrey weren't already dead to me, I would have been surprisingly indifferent to them on last night's episode of The Biggest Loser. Of course, that's probably because they hardly got any screen time, but still. Progress! (Look for them to annoy me at an exponential rate next week, though.)

But because there wasn't as much of Mandi or Aubrey, that meant there was a lot more time for "Look! Look at me! TARA! Look at me work so hard! I WANT THIS SO MUCH! If only my teammate didn't suck so much! But on the other hand, that means the show will spend a lot of time paying attention to ME! ME! LOOK! It's TARA!"

Can you tell she bugs me? Ugh.

The challenge this week involved all the contestants running/walking up a very steep hill to a wall full of keys. Once up there, they were to pick one key and bring it back down to the gym and try to unlock the door - and only two of the keys did that. Whoever got a winning key won gym privileges for their team for the entire week, while everyone else had to exercise outside without the gym equipment. So you could up your chances of getting a winning key by moving more quickly, but, at the same time, it was pretty much a game of luck - as proven by the winners, Helen and Shanon (who used her "third eye" to find the key - the eff?) and Mike and Ron (who, I think, made it up the hill twice, due to his bad knees).

So, since Tara couldn't use the gym, she took this as her opportunity to whine and cry and whine about how SHE HAS NO CONTROL and how much Laura sucks and that if their team falls below the yellow line, Tara will be sent home, and GOD LIFE IS SO HORRIBLE FOR ME! TARA! MEEEEE!

First, stop your whinging. Second, your complaining about your teammate clearly isn't going unnoticed. Laura is getting more and more beat down every week, and it culminated in this week's immunity challenge, when everyone had to use rowing machines. If you fell below a certain power level, both you and your teammate were eliminated and, clearly knowing what Tara's like, Laura was working her heart out. It was finally down to Laura/Tara and Blaine - meaning Laura had outlasted everyone else on the ranch - and, ultimately, Laura lost. And she just broke down sobbing because now Tara was going to be even more insufferable. True to form, Tara says in a confessional, "She tried her best, but it wasn't good enough."

Dude. Not cool. Given what we've seen of Laura over the past few weeks, it's clear that Tara's disapproval is getting to her, so the fact that she got that far is impressive and says a lot about how much Tara's opinion means to her. To completely ignore that and focus on how SCREWED she is makes Tara quite the buttface.

Yeah. I said it. I'll say it again: BUTT. FACE.

But then, after, like, twelve years of Tara's complaining, they didn't even fall below the yellow line. Laura actually lost more weight than Tara, so maybe that'll shut Tara up next week. GOD.

Strangely enough, the two teams that had gym access lost the least weight this week, with Helen and Shanon losing the least. Only one of them had to go home and, even more strangely, Shanon told everyone she wanted to go home, so they voted her out. (Oh, there was also a great moment earlier in the episode when she goes to make a "MEMBERS ONLY" sign for the gym, and she 1) has to ask her mom how to spell "members" and 2) makes a sign that says "MEMBER'S ONLY." Nice.)

The "where are they now?" section at the end of the show was possibly the funniest moment of the entire episode. As you may or may not know, Shanon was arrested last month for throwing a bag of flour at her downstairs tenant. (Really.) So during the Shanon update, not only was a bag of flour prominently displayed in the background, but she told us that she has recently joined a roller derby league and that her derby name is "Flower Power."

Except I think we all know that it's not quite spelled that way. Ha!

    Other notes:

    - What the heck was going on with Alison Sweeney's bangs last night? They were awful.

    - Bob continued his descent into madness, getting silently furious with his team for not voting out Blaine. "Fine, you think you have all the answers? Then don't ask for my advice." Hm, I don't recall them ever asking for your advice, Bobby.

    - Also, loved when his team was carrying a picnic table that had Bob sitting on top, and Filipe joked that everyone should drop the table at once. Bob SNAPPED, "Don't drop me!" Aaand the curtain is pulled back a little more.

    - I realize that it's a little harder to track progress when you're working outside, but goodness, Bob and Jillian really could not say enough bad things about working outside. Shouldn't they be encouraging viewers to work outside? A lot of people can't afford to join a gym. Of course, Mother Nature probably can't afford the sponsorship costs, while 24-Hour Fitness can.

What did you guys think of Tuesday's episode?

  • Friday Casualties: Lauren Conrad, Dollhouse, American Idol

    Posted Feb 13 2009, 04:57 PM by KATV with 1 comment(s)

Remember the cold I thought I was getting last week? It turned into walking pneumonia. Woo! Antibiotics! My doctor even got me a sexy, sexy puffer in case I start hyperventilating. It's a good thing it's a long weekend - with any luck, this thing will be mostly out of my system by Tuesday. Take good care of your lungs, kiddies!

-- Since it's Friday, don't forget to take a look at this week's best TV quotes. (The Jonas Brothers! Eeee!)

-- More proof that not only is Hollywood out of ideas, but they don't even have interest in coming up with new ideas: Bravo is planning a reality-show version of Gossip Girl.

-- Dollhouse, Joss Whedon's new show starring Eliza Dushku (yum), premieres tonight, so all of us Dose.ca editors got together and reminisced about our favourite Whedon moments.

-- Judging from the reviews, though, it doesn't look like Dollhouse will find a place on our list.

-- Hey, do you like The Hills? Have you dreamed about living the fun, care-free life of Lauren Conrad? Well, now you can live in her house for the LOW, LOW PRICE of $11,000 a month! (And that's American money!)

-- As you probably know by now, Joanna Pacitti was disqualified from American Idol - here's some more info on what went down.

-- Liz Lemon + Jack Bauer? Best love connection ever.

-- The Amazing Race returns this weekend! Hurray! And, even better, the producers have tweaked it so there's more action and less time in airports.

-- And, finally, here's video of Alec Baldwin making fun of Joaquin Phoenix on Late Night with Conan O'Brien.

    Enjoy your long weekend!

  • The Biggest Loser: Mandi and Aubrey are dead to me

    Posted Feb 11 2009, 03:27 PM by KATV with 4 comment(s)

That was fast. I severely underestimated Mandi and Aubrey's ability to make me hate them. Way to exceed expectations, ladies.

First off was the "pop challenge," which involved all of the contestants seeing who could stand on one foot the longest. Thrilling! The prize was spending 24 hours with a loved one, who would be brought to the ranch, and Mandi immediately began whining that she reeeeally wanted to see her husband and, in a confessional, actually says that she feels like she deserves to see her husband more. Wait, what? How do you figure, Mands? Everyone on the ranch left their loved ones, and save for the players were who just brought back a couple of weeks ago, they've been away from their families just as long as you. Why do you deserve to see your husband over them? Why, because you have children? Children you knew you'd be away from when you joined the show?

Ugh. God. The entitlement. I just want to punch her in the butt.

And then the other stupid contestants actually give Mandi the prize, like, STOP ENABLING HER, and then Mandi has the audacity to claim she won. No, you didn't win. The other players gave it to you. There is a difference. And, honestly, I couldn't care less about Mandi's codependent, unsupportive relationship with her husband her her kids, so that's all the attention I'm giving to that.

Aubrey, meanwhile, is just soooo sad because Mandi gets to see her family while Aubrey doesn't. Even though Aubrey just left home a couple of weeks ago. And Aubrey is so distracted that she only loses a pound that week. How is that possible? Unfortunately, Mandi somehow loses 6 pounds, so combined, they barely squeaked by this week. Which is annoying, because I would have loved to see both of those whiny, entitled women get sent home.

Runner-up for most annoying: Tara again. Always with the self-centred speechifying at the votes. Her crying about how much she loves Blaine and Dane, and how Blaine "touched her heart" (ew) and she didn't know how she was going to do this without them! Yes, OK, Tara, you've got your screen time for the week, times seven, so shut up now.

Most improved: Ron and Mike, who really worked hard this week. Well, Ron didn't, because of his knee, but Mike did a great job, losing, what, 13 pounds? Something like that. Very impressive. (Not impressive: Bob, who pretty much told Mike that if he didn't work harder, HIS DAD WOULD DIE. There's motivation, and there's unnecessary pressure. I know none of your trainees have ever won, Bob, but you need to rethink your motivation techniques. Seriously.)

As the weeks go by, I'm fairly sure I want Kristen to win - she's motivated and hard-working without being annoying and overbearing, TARA - and I really like Sione and Filipe. What can I say, I'm a sucker for their "WOOOOOOOO!"ing on the scales every week.

    What'd you guys think?

  • Friday Casualties: Twilight, The Mentalist, Buffy and more

    Posted Feb 06 2009, 04:17 PM by KATV with 1 comment(s)

Happy Friday, everyone! I believe I'm in the beginning stages of a cold, so I apologize if my typing is a little muffled and stuffed up.

-- OK, I realize that Twilight is a movie, not a TV show (...yet?), but I couldn't not mention this: a fan-made craft of Bella's womb. Including a little felt mutated fetus. Aw, vampire love. So romantic.

-- Also, I know I linked to my Katee Sackhoff interview yesterday, but I'm doing it again! Go read it! (Also, I've already seen tonight's episode of Battlestar Galactica and wow, it is incredible.)

-- And don't forget to check out my choices for TV's best quotes of the week.

-- Hey, do you like The Mentalist? Well, good news: next season will be filled with shows very much like it. Who says creativity is dead? (Besides, you know, everyone.)

-- Still, on the bright side, most of the CBS stars have been asked to forego their raises this year. But how will David Caruso keep his sunglasses collection up to date?

-- Meanwhile, Burn Notice star Jeffrey Donovan has been given a huge raise, from $55,000 to about $125,000-$150,000. Hey, abs like his are worth the money.

-- Sorry, Buffy fans: Joss Whedon says there won't be a movie.

-- And, finally, jilted bachelorette Stephanie claims she never felt a connection with Jason Mesnick. Yes, it was clear you weren't all that interested in him from the way you kept throwing yourself at him.

    Have a good weekend!

  • The Biggest Loser: Good riddance, Joelle

Posted Feb 05 2009, 04:33 PM by KATV with no comments

Sorry I didn't post about this yesterday, but I interviewed Katee Sackhoff of Battlestar Galactica and was busy writing that up for today (and you can read the interview here).

    But yay! Joelle's gone!

It was strange because, last week, I had almost started to like Joelle again. It seemed as though she was starting to get back her stupid issues and realize that she actually had to work on this show, and I was glad to see she had put in enough effort to bring Carla back to the ranch. (And, holy crap, how impressive is it that Carla lost 20 lbs. in a month? Good lord, woman! You are a machine!) But this week, the dead eyes were back, the nonsensical platitudes were back, the lack of motivation was back, and it was just clear that as much as I like Carla and wanted her to stay, I couldn't handle Joelle being on the ranch anymore. So I was thrilled - thrilled - when Joelle got on the scale and had lost absolutely nothing.

That being said, it was pretty pathetic that all the other teams ganged up on Joelle at the elmination, with all of their cards saying "JOELLE" in huge letters and "carla" in tiny, little letters. Yes, we get it: Joelle sucks. But she's already going home and there's no reason to make her feel worse than she already does - or worse than she would feel if she were capable of feeling human emotions. All the teams had to say was, "We're voting based on the overall effort of the team, and since both Mike and Ron were trying, we're voting for them to stay." Same result, except you don't sound like a petty butt.

In the "where are they now" segment, we learned that Carla and Joelle haven't spoken since the ranch, which is probably the best thing for both of them. It was sad to see Joelle's thousand-yard stare hadn't improved, and she clearly just had no interest in talking about what happened at all, and certainly no interest in apologizing for anything she did (or, rather, didn't) do.

Carla: "Can you understand why I was upset over what happened?"
Joelle: "I'm not sure what you're speaking of."

Really, Joelle? Really? Ugh. Girl has so many issues she has a subscription. All I can say is: good luck, Carla - I'm rooting for you to win the at-home challenge.

(Oh, and here's an exit interview with Joelle and Carla, and you'll be glad to know that Joelle continues to sound crazy and make absolutely no sense.)

Of course, now that Joelle is gone, who am I going to hate? Well, there are a few candidates.

    1) Mandi and Aubrey - Mandi's "but I have children" whining was bad enough already, but Aubrey did nothing to endear herself to me when she lost only two pounds in 30 days at home and made excuses about it... And then later, chided Joelle for making excuses. Again, I'm not defending Joelle, but really, Aubrey, you are in no position to criticize anyone's motivation or affinity for excuses.

    2) Ron - his "please save my son" spiel is kinda stale now that he's used it twice. If you want your son to stay on the ranch so badly, maybe you should be working harder. (I know, he's old and has bad knees, but please spare me the same speech next week, m'kay?)

    3) Tara - luckily for her, she backs up her big talk with big results, but her over-the-top speechifying is starting to bug. All of this "LET'S GET THIS SH*T OVER WITH" and "STOP CRYING, LET'S JUST WORK IT OUT" and pounding tables with her fists while yelling "WHY DON'T YOU GET IT?!?!" at people just seems like a shameless ploy for airtime.

Oh, and by the way, thanks, Biggest Loser, for telling me that all I need to lose weight is a big box of CHEERIOS! I'm sure you're telling me out of the goodness of your hearts, and it has nothing to do with sponsorship. So thoughtful.

  • Battlestar Galactica, "The Oath"

    Posted Feb 02 2009, 02:45 PM by KATV with 3 comment(s)

What a fantastic episode - especially compared to "A Disquiet that Follows My Soul," which I thought was kind of a let-down after the premiere. After the events that happened to him in the BSG websidoes The Face of the Enemy, Gaeta decides that the Galactica fleet cannot - and will not - join with the Cylons, no matter what, and orchestrates a giant coup. Everyone's after the Final Five, the Cylons who were already in the fleet, Roslin, Adama, and basically anyone else who isn't totally against the toasters. Even when some of the Cylons seem to have reformed, Gaeta knows that they are capable of even more deception, and after the last years of running and fighting and losing, he's not willing to turn around and invite all of them to his weekly book group.

"The Oath" was part one of a two-parter, ending with Gaeta ordering his underlings to attack a shuttle carrying Roslin and Baltar, even more underlings apparently blowing up Adama and Tigh (although if that's how they go out, I'm gonna be pissed) and Starbuck and Lee staying behind to bring everyone down. This episode brought everything back to the level it should be, and had so many great moments of moral ambiguity, which is what Battlestar does best.

-- What I loved most about the coup is that Gaeta and Zarek and everyone else on their side are totally, completely right. The Cylons all but destroyed their race, enslaved the rest of them for months on end. The fleet has spent the entire run of the series trying to keep the Cylons out of their systems and now Adama wants to install Cylon programs into their networks, just because a faction of supposedly "good" Cylons claim to be on our side? What if Cavil and the rest of the "bad" Cylons show up and take over the computers?

-- The only problem I had with that part of the story was that all of the members of the coup were such butts, you know? I know it's realistic that people would use the coup as an excuse to settle some grudges - Gaeta getting back at the Eights (and himself) for what happened in the websidoes, some of the Pegasus members looking to get revenge on the Galactica members, Seelix is mad that Anders never asked her out (seriously) - but I think it would have been easier to sympathize with their side if we'd been shown a few more people just saying, "Joining up with the Cylons after all that's been done to us just can't happen because too much can go wrong."

-- On the bright side of the coup, it brought Starbuck out of her funk. Instead of moping about how something is wrong with her - something's obviously wrong if you find your own dead corpse, right? - the coup allowed her to feel alive again, to have something to fight for. This is the Starbuck I missed.

-- Two great Adama/Roslin moments: 1) when Tigh visits Adama in his quarters and Roslin comes out in a robe, clearly having spent the night. The look on Tigh's face is incredible. 2) Similarly, when the escapees meet up and Roslin and Adama make out in front of everyone, to their shock and amusement. (And our own amusement, to be sure.)

-- Even though they may (may) have been blown up at the end of the episode, how great were Adama and Tigh as they made their way through the ship? Beating up much younger, stronger soldiers; making plans together, deciding to die together. It's the first sign that some sins won't win over history.

What did you guys think of "The Oath"?
